Benito "Benny" Barrera, 68, of Dimmitt passed away Monday, November 26, 2012 in Amarillo. Funeral services will be Thursday, November 29, 2012 at First Baptist Church of Dimmitt at 2:00 PM with Brother Salvador Carrasco and Brother Joe Barrera officiating, burial to follow at Castro Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Dimmitt. Prayer service to be Wednesday evening at 6:00 pm at the funeral home. Arrangements are being handled by Colonial Funeral Home of Dimmitt. Benny was born on October 19, 1944 in La Feria, Texas to Cesario and Petra Barrera. He was 4th of ten children. At the young age of 19, Benny met Amelia Garza and had his heart stolen. They were married on December 29, 1963 in Dimmitt. Benny worked for Walt Hanson for 15 years. He later went to work selling cars for the Ford House, then became self-employed selling cars and retired at the age of 67. Benny's passion was baseball. He coached and played ball for many years. There were many Sunday afternoons spent having barbeques with the team. As the years passed in Dimmitt, Benny crossed paths with many people; his children's friends, nieces, nephews, co-workers, even strangers, he touched many people's lives. He definitely was a person who was hard to forget once you met him. He loved to joke around and make everyone smile and laugh. He had many people who looked up to him as a father figure. He always gave good advice and never sugar coated it. He played "Daddy", not only to his children but to his grandchildren, his foster children, his nieces, nephews, even some of his siblings, and to anyone who approached him needing some guidance. He was a very affectionate and loving man. He never ran out of hugs or kisses. He was very playful and energetic and full of words of praise. He made his family feel special in his own way. He loved life, his friends and most of all his family. He was a great man who will be missed and remembered by many, what a legacy he has left. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Amelia Barrera of Dimmitt; one son, Christopher Ben Barrera of Dimmitt; three daughters, Neoumi Barrera of Ft. Worth, Yvette Gonzalez of Ft. Worth and Kristi Longoria of Midland. 11 grandchildren, Christopher Charles Perez of Amarillo, Stayce Christine Perez of Lubbock, Jeremy Barrera of Ft. Worth, Aaron Barrera of Ft. Worth, Bryan, Roxanne, Matthew and Miranda Gonzalez of Grand Prairie, Christopher Ben Barrera, Jr. of Amarillo, Jessie Danielle Longoria and Evan James Longoria of Midland. 2 brothers, Abelardo Barrera of Dimmitt and Emilio Barrera of Amarillo, 5 sisters. Amelia Gutierrez of Amarillo, Elodia Martinez , Maria Ellena Puente and Gloria Galvan all of Dimmitt and Adela Acevedo of Georgetown. He is preceded in death by his parents, Cesario and Petra Barrera; a brother, Roberto Barrera and a sister, Maria Antonia Diaz , a daughter, Maria Isabel Barrera and a granddaughter, Alyssa Marie Barrera.
