Mary "Catherine" Hochstein, 92, a lifelong resident of Nazareth, Texas joined our Heavenly Father on Saturday June 18, 2022, surrounded by her family. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, at 10:30 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church in Nazareth, Texas with Rev. Bhaskar Adusupalli, Deacon Bob Birkenfeld and Deacon Joe Hochstein as celebrants. Rosary/Vigil services will be held on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at 7:00 PM at Holy Family Catholic Church. Reception of her body at the church be will earlier that day at 4:00 PM. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Colonial Funeral Home of Dimmitt.
Catherine was born to Florence (F.P.) and Lucille (Braddock) Schacher on May 25, 1930, on the family farm outside of Nazareth, Texas. She was the oldest of 8 children. She graduated from Nazareth High School as valedictorian of her class. Catherine married William C. (Junior) Hochstein on July 19, 1949, and they shared 72 wonderful years of marriage before his passing on August 6, 2021. Not only was he her partner in life but her partner on the dance floor. They were blessed with 13 children.
Faith, family, and community were important to her, and she did all things with a servant's heart. She was a charter member of the Catholic Daughters and was a dedicated member for over 60 years. She was a member of the Christian Mother's Society, Legion Auxiliary, and PTA. She was also a 4-H leader for many years and taught all her daughters and many others the art of sewing, baking, cooking, canning, and other life skills. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, canning, and sewing for which she was recognized with many awards that she won with her fair entries. She was an excellent seamstress and sewed anything and everything from barbie doll clothes, and clothes for her children including suits and wedding dresses. She crocheted doilies, potholders, baby blankets, afghans, and scarves among many other things. She took up upholstery and refurbished furniture and even completely re-upholstered a boat. She always had a huge garden and preserved everything possible to feed her large family and anyone else that happened to stop by at mealtime. Anybody, especially grandkids, that walked in the door made their first stop at the fully stocked cookie drawer.
She was very proud of her family and enjoyed supporting their activities. She found time in her busy schedule to attend most of her kids', grandkids', and great grandkids' activities. She loved huge family gatherings and always enjoyed all the cooking that needed to take place. Her love was shown by example in so many ways. Her loving heart and caring efforts will be greatly missed.
Catherine was preceded in death by her parents, F.P. and Lucille Schacher, her husband Junior, her oldest daughter Sharon Brockman, brothers Edwin and Eugene Schacher, and sister Leona Maurer.
Those left to cherish her memories are her daughters: Debbie (Jerry) Mazura, Patti (Dennis) Kern, Carol Kern, Mary Jeanne Hochstein, Dianne (Virgil) Huseman, Bobbi (Danny) McGregor. Sons: Larry (Paige) Hochstein, Jimmy (Carla) Hochstein, Johnny (Susan) Hochstein, Micky (Meredith) Hochstein, Randy (Marita) Hochstein, Bill Hochstein, and son-in-law Ralph Brockman, 38 Grandchildren, 50 Great-Grandchildren with 3 Greats and 1 Great-Great Grandchild on the way.
She is also survived by sisters Georgiann McCormick, Rosalie Davis, and Margie Albracht, and brother Bobby Schacher.
