Daniel Lee Nelson, 85, of Dimmitt, Texas passed away on Tuesday, October 19, 2021. Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at 10:30AM in the Fourth & Bedford Church of Christ with James Jones and Bailey Chisum officiating. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery under the care of Colonial Funeral Home of Dimmitt. The family will receive friends on Friday, October 22, 2021 from 5:00PM to 7:00PM at the funeral home.
Daniel Lee Nelson was born on May 18, 1936, to Clarence L. Nelson and Opal (Bordofske) Nelson in Quanah, Texas. He graduated from Abernathy High School in 1954. He married his high school sweetheart, Hazel Thomas, on July 8, 1956. In January 1957, they moved to Dimmitt, where he lived until his death. He farmed in the Easter Community after moving to Dimmitt. In 1965, he started Nelson Well Service and has continued operating the business to this day.
He was a member of the 4th & Bedford Church of Christ where he led the singing for 50 years and led the church choir for many funerals. He encouraged many youngsters to lead singing through the years.
Dan was president of the Castro County Hospital Board at the time Dr. Randy Hardee was hired and still brags about Dr. Hardee's hiring. Another thing he likes to tell everyone, is that he made the All-State Band in High School.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel; daughters, Melanie Burney and husband, King of George West, Pam Ray and husband, Darrel of Lubbock, son, Robert Nelson and wife Krystal of Dimmitt, and an AFS daughter, Ulla Bohman and husband Hans of Sweden. Five grandchildren; Klay Clearman and wife Tori, Amber Hunter, Morgan Nelson, Tristan Nelson, and Tara Wharem and husband Sean. Five great grandchildren; Kennedy, Jensen, and Karlee Clearman, Fox and Maddox Wharem. One brother; Corky Nelson. One sister; Earlene Myatt. One sister-in-law; Sharon Nelson. Also, two special sons; Dwight McDonald and Tracy Thomas and 2 special granddaughters; Caroline and Clementine Myrick.
Preceded in death by his parents, Clarence & Opal Nelson, sister, Shirley Kent, brother, Jim Nelson, Brother-in-law, J.H. Myatt, Sister-in-law, Virginia Nelson, and Niece, Dione Steffens.
Dan's love for his wife, children and grandchildren was expressed every day. He will be greatly missed. As Kennedy, granddaughter, said as she patted her heart, "He's in here."
