Kenneth Hollums, 84, of Dimmitt, Texas passed away on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at his home. Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at 10:30AM in the First Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Wright and Pastor Jonathan Sullivan officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direct care of Colonial Funeral Home of Dimmitt. The family will receive friends on Friday, March 15, 2019 from 6:00PM – 8:00PM at the funeral home located at 809 Butler Blvd., Dimmitt, TX 79027.
Kenneth Hollums was born on June 17, 1934 in Wise County to Roy E. Hollums and Audrey J. (Foster) Hollums. Kenneth attended school in Floydada and graduated from Floydada High School in 1952. He then moved to Castro County and lived in the Jumbo community where he and his dad farmed. On June 1, 1953 Kenneth married the love his life Shirley (White) Hollums. Kenneth later joined the United States Navy in 1955 and served in Kodiak Alaska where he was a firefighter. He was the only firefighter that was 21 years old which made him the only one at the time to drive the fire truck and any other fire equipment. While serving in the Navy, he also received high achievement awards in Alaskan Wilderness training and marksmanship. Kenneth returned to Dimmitt and worked for the Chevrolet house as a mechanic while receiving several leader achievement awards for service. He later became a salesman where he also won several leaders of legion sales awards. In 1984, Kenneth purchased Dimmitt Brake & Muffler and operated that business until his retirement in 2007. Kenneth was a Volunteer Fireman since 1955 serving his community while also volunteering as an ambulance driver and volunteering his time working for Helping Hands for the First Baptist Church. Kenneth enjoyed gardening, working in his yard, making people laugh with his quick wit, but most of all enjoyed serving others.
Kenneth is survived by 2 daughters, Kimmie Embers of New York City, Cindy Odom and husband Mike of Dimmitt, 3 granddaughters, Brooke Kirby and husband Matthew of Panhandle, Rae Brockman of Lubbock and Shae McLain and husband Logan of Amarillo, 5 great-grandchildren, Mason McLain, Hattie McLain, Cy Brockman, Kloey Kirby and Kambry Kirby, brother-in-law, Darrell Pope and wife Shirley of Tampa, FL, and a special friend, Lee Norris.
Kenneth is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Hollums, sister, Marleen Green and brother in law, Don Green.
