Luciano Mata, 92, a longtime resident of Hart, Texas, passed away on Monday, March 23, 2026, in Hart. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at 10:00 AM at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, 312 7th Street, Hart, Texas, with Celebrant David Contreras officiating. Luciano will be laid to rest in Hart, the town he made his home, in Hart Cemetery. Arrangements and services have been entrusted to Colonial Funeral Home of Dimmitt, Texas. Viewing will be held on Friday, March 27, 2026, from 4:00-7:00 PM with a rosary and vigil at 6:00 PM at the funeral home.

Luciano was born on January 7, 1934, in Potrero de los Sánchez (a small town located in the municipality of Guadalcázar, in the state of San Luis Potosi (SLP), Mexico) to Jose Mata and Anselma Ramirez. Luciano left Mexico when he was a teenager and moved to the United States to be able to earn a better living. He settled in Hart, Texas, in 1955, and lived in Hart for the remainder of his life.

Luciano was later joined in Hart by his wife, Emma Mata. They lived with their four children (Ysidra, Francis, Erasmo and Rene) south of Hart for about 50 years, and all of his children attended Hart schools. Luciano and Emma were also parishioners at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Hart.

Luciano worked with Brooks Farms (with the Paul and Irene Brooks family) from 1955 until he retired in 2013. He farmed milo, corn and cotton in Castro County, Lamb County and, on occasion, Dawson County. While Luciano slowed down some when he retired, he could still be spotted driving a tractor for some years after that. Luciano eventually moved into Hart and lived with his sons (Erasmo and Rene) and his daughter-in-law, Blanca, until his death.

Luciano is remembered as a loyal and loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He is also remembered for his steady and calm presence, but also for the funny stories and humor he added to every event or visit.

Luciano was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Emma; and his brothers, Nazario Mata and Aurelio Mata.

Luciano is survived by his children (Ysidra Valenzuela and husband Lorenzo Valenzuela of Allen, Texas; Francis Mata Broyles and husband Michael Broyles of Amarillo, Texas; Erasmo Mata of Hart; and Rene Mata and wife Blanca Mata of Hart), six grandchildren (Yvonne Valenzuela Kent and husband Mike Kent of Anna, Texas; Lorenzo Valenzuela, Jr. and wife Celine Valenzuela of Plano, Texas; Jerramy Broyles of Amarillo; Tristan Broyles of Amarillo; Paizle Reyna Mata of Hart; and Ashley Reemsnyder of Amarillo), and seven great-grandchildren (Marcelo Kent, Leandro Kent and Amelia Emma Kent, Lucius Broyles, Damien Broyles, Vergil Broyles, and Evangeline Broyles). He is also survived by his sisters (Simona Avila of Estación Velazco, SLP, Mexico and Aurora Reyes of Monticello, Indiana); his brothers, (Jacinto Mata of Ciudad Mante, Tamaulipas, Mexico; Venancio Mata of Monterrey Nuevo León, Mexico; and Gregorio Mata, also of Ciudad Mante); and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
