Nancy was born August 6, 1933 at her grandparent's home near Pampa TX. She was born on the anniversary of her parents, Tom and NauVita Davis. She has been told that her mother wanted to name her Crystal Twyladeen, but changed her mind to Nancy Sue.
She grew up in Pampa and was quite a tomboy – loving baseball and golf and helping her dad at the airport. Tom was an executive pilot for Dick Hughes, a businessman in Pampa. When Nancy was in high school, Mr. Hughes noticed her determination while helping her dad and told Tom to have her choose which college she wanted to attend. He would raise Tom's salary to cover the tuition. This generous act changed Nancy's life.
Nancy chose to attend Frank Phillips College in Borger and then go to TCU in Fort Worth to major in Home economics. She really enjoyed her years as a "horned frog." She said that at one time Buddy Holly serenaded the girls at her dorm. Elvis, before he got famous, had a concert nearby and she had a chance to go, but passed it up because she wanted to study for an exam. She still became a big Elvis fan. She earned her bachelor's degree from TCU and later earned her master's degree in education from West Texas State College, now known as WTAMU.
In March of 1957, the superintendent of Hart ISD asked her to complete the school year teaching Home Ec. There she met the handsome young AG teacher, J.V. Wescott. A short 5 months later they were married on her birthday. They made their home in Hart, moving into a teacherage on Ave G. In 1961 they purchased land from Bud Steiert and built their dream home. In this home they raised two beautiful children. Marci D'Lynn was born January 16, 1962 and Jay Hallmark was born April 24 1964. Their marriage lasted 34 years until J.V. passing in 1991.
J.V. and Nancy devoted their lives to teaching. Nancy taught all grades throughout the years, but her favorite was 2nd grade. She and JV worked to implement the CVAE programs of Hart to provide real world training for students heading into the workforce. J.V.s focus was shop trades, while Nancy ran commercial kitchen and textiles training programs. During this time Nancy became famous for her Spudnuts. The CVAE program made hundreds each week to be sold at the school, sports concessions, and local businesses. She's shared this recipe, but no one can quite replicate them. She loved teaching so much and made a difference in many young people's lives. She was named teacher of the year in 1979 and again in 1993.
Nancy finished her career in the elementary grades, retiring in 2001. She was active in the Hart community. She and J.V. were members of the Hart United Methodist Church for many years. They were founding members of the Hart Golden Group. Nancy was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma teacher's sorority, the Zealot Club, the United Methodist Women, and Castro County Retired Teachers.
Nancy welcomed two grandchildren – Jordan Vale born July 27, 1989, and Hannah Elizabeth born October 23, 1992. They spent lots of time having fun at "Grandmommy's" house.
Her son Jay was killed in a car accident in 2013. In 2014, Nancy moved to Amarillo to be closer to family, but still considered Hart to be her true home.
She enjoyed traveling, gardening, jigsaw puzzles, playing games, word searches, crafts of all kinds and loved watching wild birds. Most of all, she loved dogs. There were so many over the years, but each had their own districting personality. She loved and spoiled each and every one.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband J.V, her son Jay, a sister Ellen, and numerous members of J.V.s family which she considered her own. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Marci and Tom Jones of Amarillo, a grandson Jordan Vale Jones who currently lives in her home in Hart, and a granddaughter Hannah Jones of Amarillo.
