Newlon Rowland's Obituary
Newlon Rowland, 85, of Hart, Texas passed away on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 in Lubbock. Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at 10:00AM in the First Baptist Church in Hart with Rev. Donna Lindley officiating. Burial will follow in Hart Cemetery under the direct care of Colonial Funeral Home of Dimmitt. The Rowland family will receive friends on Friday from 5:00PM to 7:00PM at the funeral home.
Newlon Rowland was born on July 2, 1932 in Mead, Oklahoma to Newt Rowland and Mariam (Nunn) Rowland. Newlon and his family moved to Hart, Texas in 1960 where he began to farm. Newlon started school in Snyder, Texas and then graduated from Plains High School. He attended Texas Tech University where he ran track for a year before being drafted into the United States Army. He served from 1952-1953 in Panama and served as a high-speed radio operator. He married Carolyn (Jones) Rowland on January 21, 1956 and then decided to attend South Plains Junior College and played on the first-ever men's basketball team at SPC. After retiring from farming, Newlon began raising running quarter horses and travelled to race tracks in New Mexico and Texas. Newlon served 11 ½ years as County Commissioner of Precinct 1 for Castro County. Through the years Newlon played many rounds of golf at Olton Country Club and attended many of their grandchildren's sporting events. Newlon was a longtime member of both the First United Methodist Church and the Hart Lions Club. In 2017, Newlon and Carolyn Rowland were named co-parade marshals for the annual Hart Days Parade.
Newlon is survived by his wife, Carolyn Rowland of Hart, TX, 1 son, Ricky Rowland and wife Zenita of Nazareth, TX, 3 daughters, Rhonda Aven and husband Lester of Hart, TX, Suzahn Eicke and husband Jason of Happy, TX and Cristi Conger and husband Jim of Midland, TX, sister, Treta Kay Conner and husband Roger of Breckenridge, TX, sister-in-law, Elaine Hicks of Midland, TX, 11 grandchildren, Jason Aven, Jared Aven, Jordy Rowland, Nicky Rowland, Lexie Rowland, Kailee Law, Kinzee Detton, Maesa Eicke, Utah Eicke, Sydney Tolifson and Regan Tolifson and 15 great-grandchildren.
Newlon is preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Doyle Rowland and Dwain Rowland.
