Pauline Louise (Polly) Bell, age 102, of Dimmitt, Texas fell asleep and joined her Lord December 12, 2011 at Bivins Nursing Home in Amarillo. Pauline was born on December 4, 1909 on a sheep ranch near Livingston, Montana, to Ben and Mary Schaefer. She moved to Dallas when she was seven and then to Olton, Texas when she was thirteen. She married Elmo Bell on August 7, 1926. Elmo managed a lumber yard and farmed. They had two children, Lonnie Bell and Karen Sheffy. They moved to Lubbock in 1946. Elmo operated a service station and Pauline worked at Hemphill Wells. They were active members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Pauline taught Sunday school. In 1951 they decided to return to farming and moved to Dimmitt. Pauline was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She was for many years the chairperson of the Fall Bazaar held by the church. She was also a member of the Rebecca Lodge. She worked at the Vogue Dress Shop, Mannings Department Store, Womble's Gift and Hardware, and King-Seely Furniture Store. She and Elmo loved to travel and they especially loved the mountains, hiking and fishing. They took extended trips to the western and eastern portions of the United States and also to Canada. Her beloved husband died suddenly on September 5, 1967. Pauline took art lessons. She became an accomplished china painter, painted with oils and water colors, and did many other popular art forms. Her art work can be found all over the United States because she shared her china painting and oils. She loved gardening and spent many hours in her flower garden. She took numerous cruises and trips abroad with her sister, Mary and friends. She loved and was loved by her family and friends. She was a quiet person and always ready to listen. In her early years she was the hairdresser for the nieces and they loved for her to make them feel pretty. She was also an accomplished seamstress. She made a lot of clothing, costumes and doll clothes. She is survived by her son, Lonnie Bell and wife, Annette, of Lubbock, and by her daughter, Karen Sheffy, of Dimmitt; seven grandchildren, two grand-exchange students, fifteen great grandchildren and thirteen great, great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, two sisters, Mary Blair and husband, Bill Blair, of Missoula, Montana; Winnie Nicas, of Escondido, California, and one sister-in-law, Fannie Steele of Horseheads, New York. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmo Bell; her brother, George Schaefer; sister, Mildred Schaefer; daughter-in-law, Janice Bell; son-in-law, Don Sheffy; and three sisters-in-law. She was also preceded by two long time friends, Mayme Birdwell and B.M. Nelson.
