Ray Don Newman, 79, of Dimmitt passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2012 in Dimmitt. Ray Don was born June 2, 1932 in Hart, Texas to Hubert Eugene and Eunice Bostick Newman. He was raised in Castro County and graduated from Hart High School. He married Colleen Rich in November of 1950 in Hart. He farmed for five years and went on to graduate from Wayland Baptist University. He and Colleen moved to El Paso where he taught school for a short while and later went on to work for the El Paso Utility Company from 1959-1963. He and Colleen moved back to Dimmitt where Ray Don was the Hospital Administrator from 1963-1967. He worked for the United States Agency of International Development based out of Washington, D.C., Ray Don's post was in Vietnam where he lived for 6 years. Ray Don was employed with the United States Government for 27 years receiving many awards and special recognition. In June of 1973 he and Colleen moved back to Washington, D.C. and he retired in December of 1993 where he and Colleen returned to their hometown of Dimmitt. Ray Don was very active and dedicated to his community, including being a Deacon, Sunday School teacher and a member of the First Baptist Church from 1988-2012, member of the Dimmitt Lions Club, and active with the Democratic Party. He loved sports and golf. He was not an idle man. He loved his community and his family. He is survived by his wife, Colleen Newman of Dimmitt; one daughter, Beverly Isbell and her husband Darrell of Richmond Hill, GA; one son, Max Newman and his wife Karen of Dimmitt. Two brothers, Joe Newman and his wife Jan of Denton and Max Newman and his wife Loyce of Levelland. Four grandchildren, Richard Newman of Colorado Springs, Co.; Justin Newman of Lubbock; Daryn Isbell of Niceville, Fl. and Dondi Mock of Richmond Hill, GA. Nine great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
