Robert W. Smith, 80, retired farmer and rancher of Dimmitt died Thursday March 12, 2015 at 7:30 P.M. in Olton Texas. Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Monday March 16, 2015 at the Colonial Funeral Home Chapel in Dimmitt with Rev. Jonathan Sullivan pastor of the First Baptist Church in Dimmitt, officiating. Private family burial will follow in the Restlawn Memorial Park in Hereford by Colonial Funeral Home of Dimmitt. Robert was born July 8, 1934 in the home of his parents, the Leland Smiths, ten miles southwest of Dimmitt. He attended school in Dimmitt and graduated from Dimmitt High School in 1952 where he was the starting guard on the 1952 undefeated State Championship basketball team that was coached by the late legendary coach John W. Blaine. He attended Wayland Baptist University in Plainview where he was on the Wayland Pioneer team. Robert later served two years in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged receiving the Good Conduct medal. He returned home and began his career farming land that his great-grandfather William Smith had farmed since 1897, eventually spreading the operation to New Mexico with cattle and horses. He retired from farming and ranching in 2003 due to his health. He married Norma Grace Gray December 29, 1961 in Hereford. The have celebrated over fifty-three years of marriage. He is survived by his wife Norma of Dimmitt, three children, Judith Smith-Polansky of Austin, John Robert Smith and wife Kellie of Amarillo, and Jill Elise Smith of Riverside, California, four grandchildren, Jessica, Kynzee, Courtney and Grayson Robert.
