Shirley May Cornett, 83, of Dimmitt, Texas passed away peacefully on Monday, February 10, 2020 in Dimmitt. Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00AM on Thursday, February 13, 2020 in the First United Methodist Church with Rev. T.C. Broom officiating. Burial will follow in Castro Memorial Gardens Cemetery under the care of Colonial Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5:30PM – 7:30PM on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at the funeral home.
Shirley May (Grant) Cornett was born on April 16, 1936 in Prairie Grove, Arkansas to Clyde Grant and Florence (Cochran) Grant. Shirley grew up in the Cane Hill area of Arkansas, and moved to Texas at the age of 16. Shirley was a talented basketball player and graduated from Amherst High School. She married Roy Dale Underwood and they raised their children Roger, Brenda and Danny in the Bethel Community. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Dimmitt. She enjoyed her years of working as an administrative secretary for Dimmitt ISD and Nazareth ISD. Shirley later became a real estate agent and worked in the business for a number of years. She was an avid golfer and a enthusiastic member of the Ladies Golf Association in Dimmitt. On April 22, 1988, she married Don Cornett and was blessed with 4 more children Mike, Kim, Tad and Shellie. Shirley and Don were passionate about the game of golf, played with competitive spirit, and cherished every moment spent on the golf course with family and friends.
Shirley is survived by her children, Brenda Porsch and husband Willie, Danny Underwood and wife Debbie, Mike Cornett and wife Jackie all of Dimmitt, Tad Cornett and wife Cindi, Shellie Powell and husband Jeff all of Lubbock, sister, Mary Lee Whitlow of Amarillo, brothers, Bo Grant of Ft. Worth and Roscoe Grant and wife Brenda of Cresson, grandchildren, Jake Porsch, Dennis Underwood, Landon Porsch, David Underwood, Schuler Underwood, Bryce Parker, Bree Cornett, Tyler Cornett, Mackenzie Braidfoot, Landon Lamb, Taber Black, Jade McPherson, and Blythe McPherson, 8 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Shirley is preceded in death by her husband, Don Cornett, 2 children, Roger Underwood and Kim McPherson, granddaughters, Kami Denae Porsch and Brooke Parker, and 2 brothers, J.C. Grant and Robert Grant.
God blessed Shirley with loving caregivers, Dominga Esqueda, Linda Lopez, Ashley Sanchez, Eileen Womack, Maria Lopez, Yasmin Marin, Sylvia Herrera and Diana Torres.
