Shirley Nelson's Obituary
Shirley Nelson, 83, of Hart, Texas passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2018 in Lubbock. Celebration of Life Service will be Saturday at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church in Hart, Texas with Rev. Donna Lindley and Rev. Tom Long officiating, burial to follow at Hart Cemetery in Hart. Arrangements are being handled by Colonial Funeral Home of Dimmitt. Family and friend visitation to be Friday evening from 5:00-7:00PM at the funeral home.
Shirley was born July 15, 1934 in Tulia, Texas to Charlie and Ruby (Broughton) Sims. Shirley has been a resident of the Hart community since 1952. She graduated from Tulia High School in 1952 and shortly thereafter married the love of her life, David Nelson on September 4, 1952 in Oklahoma. Shirley and her husband farmed in Hart and Shirley continued to farm up until her death, she also was the bookkeeper for the farm. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hart, a past member of the Golden Group for many years and taught Sunday school at her church. Shirley was very active and very involved in her church. Shirley enjoyed fishing, traveling with her son, Vic and daughter-in-law, Dana, needlepoint, gardening orchard, landscaping and hardly ever missed a Lady Raider Basketball game. But above all these hobbies her greatest of all was being around and involved with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchild.
Those left to cherish Shirley's memories are her two daughters, Cathy Garner and husband Mike of Plainview and Lisa Kiernan of Dallas, a daughter-in-law, Dana Nelson of Amarillo and her sweet dog, Abel; five grandchildren, Brian Nelson, Brady Nelson and his wife Ann, Kevin Drewry, Matt Kiernan and Amy Kiernan; five great grandchildren, Brittany Garnett, Braden Nelson, Maggie, Miles and Mary Nelson and one great-great grandchild, Karsyn Garnett.
Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, David Nelson, a son, Vic Nelson and three brothers, Kenneth, Neil and Gene Sims.
