Walter Elizabeth (Smith) Maynard, 84, of Dimmitt, Texas passed away on Friday, August 28, 2026, in Dimmitt.

Walter was born on July 28, 1942, in Memphis, Texas, to John and Marguerite “Sal” (Murdock) Smith. She attended school in Memphis, graduated from Memphis High School, and continued her education at Colorado Woman’s College.

Walter married Wade Maynard on November 24, 1961, at First Methodist Church in Memphis, Texas. The couple had their first date at the Carlile Movie Theatre in Dimmitt, Texas.

Walter worked as a secretary for Castro County Nursing Home, First State Bank and served as secretary of First Baptist Church for 30 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Dimmitt and Beta Sigma Phi. A talented pianist, Walter, played for church services and taught piano lessons to many children in Dimmitt. She also helped organize and launch Meals on Wheels for the Dimmitt community.

Walter enjoyed camping in the mountains, spending time with family, and serving others. Patient, caring, and generous, she seemed to know just when someone needed encouragement and how to connect them with the right person.

Those left to cherish her memories are her husband of 64 years Wade Maynard of Dimmitt, Texas; her three grandsons, Derrick Maynard of Austin, Texas, Brian Maynard and his wife Kirstie of College Station, Texas, and Cody Maynard and his wife Savannah of Elgin, Texas; her two great granddaughters, Mya Maynard and Maddy Maynard; and her sister-in-law Sharon Swaringin of Arlington, Texas.

She is preceded in death by her parents John and Sal Smith; son Wyette Maynard; and brother-in-law Dave Swaringin.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at First Baptist Church of Dimmitt, with Dr. Jonathan Sullivan officiating. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Dimmitt under the care and direction of Colonial Funeral Home of Dimmitt.

Viewing and visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, August 31, 2026, at the funeral home.
